As a Georgia-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, DiaBeating The Odds is dedicated to helping individuals impacted by all types of diabetes live healthy and fulfilling lives. We focus on breaking down common barriers to effective diabetes management through education, access, and community connection. 

 

At DTO, we believe managing diabetes goes beyond medication and doctor visits. It’s also about emotional well-being, social support, and equitable access to care. Through our guiding principles of equity, education, and community, we create spaces and programs that uplift, inform, and inspire individuals to DiaBeat The Odds, one day at a time.

About the Founder

Portia Benbow

Portia Benbow is the passionate Founder and Executive Director of DiaBeating The Odds, a nonprofit built on faith, resilience, and purpose. Living with Type 1 diabetes since 1999, Portia transformed her personal journey with diabetes into a mission to empower others facing similar challenges. 

With over a decade of experience in community engagement, she leads with both heart and strategy, creating programs that educate, uplift, and unite individuals affected by diabetes. Her story is one of strength and service, proving that a diagnosis doesn’t define you; it can inspire purpose and possibility. 

Through her leadership, DiaBeating The Odds continues to break down barriers, inspire change, and help individuals confidently DiaBeat The Odds, one day at a time.

Our Leadership Team

DiaBeating The Odds is guided by a dedicated Board of Directors and an Advisory Council. Our Board of Directors provides governance, oversight, and strategic guidance, ensuring the organization remains accountable to its mission and community. The Advisory Council serves in an advisory capacity, offering expertise, insights, and support to help shape programs, outreach, and initiatives. Together, the board and council bring together a diverse group of leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals dedicated to advancing DiaBeating The Odds’ mission of promoting diabetes awareness, education, and equitable access to care. 

 

We are currently in a period of growth and transition, actively recruiting passionate individuals to join our board and council. As we expand our leadership teams, we remain committed to strengthening governance, fostering collaboration, and building a network of leaders who are invested in empowering individuals and communities affected by diabetes.
